Public Services
The concept
"When I first created the first advertising bus shelters, free of charge to local authorities. I wanted to take on several challenges: to provide a service to public transport users; to remedy the problem of dilapidated equipment; to fight against surplus and unsightly advertising and, by revaluing it, make known the lively role that quality advertising can play." Jean-Claude Decaux.
The key benefit for local authorities is the availability of high quality street furniture and Outdoor advertising media in premium locations which wouldn't otherwise exist due to the high costs of commissioning, installing and rigorously maintaining the infrastructure.
To ensure quality, we employ our own maintenance teams to install, repair and stringently maintain all assets.

"JCDecaux has created the right combination of appropriate design, economic viability and a high level of maintenance that
is essential if street furniture is to be successful. We have
found that JCDecaux, more than any other company, understands
the realities of designing, manufacturing and installing
equipment."
Sir Norman Foster - Designer
We believe that good design is the key to both the commercial value and public appreciation of Outdoor advertising.
That's why over the years we've developed expertise in the design and construction of streetscape enhancing Outdoor advertising platforms.
The world's leading designers
To complement the designs of our 120-strong Paris-based research and development team, JCDecaux commissions single elements and complete co-cordinated ranges from many of the world's best designers. Over the years we have commissioned 52 of the world's top designers and architects to create Street Furniture designs for JCDecaux.
"JCDecaux attaches great importance to the quality of design, which it fully adapts to the character of each city, and also to its scrupulous street furniture maintenance program."
Knud Holscher – Designer
Bus shelter designs:
For us the hallmarks of good design are functionality and ease of use, combined with aesthetics that are sympathetic to the environment and context.
A range of other important considerations are also fundamental to our approach:
Disability access: We aim to make street furniture available to everyone. To that end, we created the world's first universally accessible automatic public toilet complete with instructions in Braille and multiple languages, verbal messages, handle and knob-free sinks, and greater doorway and internal space for increased mobility access.
Flexibility: Our designs allow for variations to complement unique environments like heritage buildings, commercial, residential and educational environments.
Technology: To enhance structures we build in capabilities like real-time transport information, and scrolling panels wherever they are appropriate.
Maintenance to a quality standard, not a price.
What differentiates us from our competitors is our absolute commitment to the maintenance and service of our infrastructure.
Rigorous cleaning schedules, refurbishment during the contract period and rapid response to breakages and vandalism are the hallmarks of JCDecaux's standard operations. This has earned us an enviable reputation for the ongoing service that forms part of every contract, and has contributed substantially to our global success.
To ensure our high standards are met, maintenance is only carried out by our own specially trained JCDecaux teams. Of over 8,900 employees worldwide, 30% are fully dedicated to the installation, cleaning, repair and general maintenance of street furniture. In Australia, that proportion is even higher, with a full two-thirds of our workforce dedicated to ongoing maintenance of our assets.
Maintenance program
We develop a maintenance plan with every authority. As a minimum requirement we carry out the following for each asset:
- Regular full clean of furniture,
- Weekly inspection of furniture,
- Removal of graffiti and vandalism within 24 hours of notification,
- Emergency response times to glass breakages or damaged furniture,
- Repair and replacement of parts,
- Regular routine maintenance,
- Ongoing refurbishment of JCDecaux infrastructure as required throughout the life of the contract, and
- Provision of 24-hour 'hotline' number to report any damages to the furniture.
