The Bourke Street stairs at Southern Cross Station have been transformed into a scenic garden to motivate commuters to ditch the escalator and take the stairs.

The artwork, ‘Put a Spring in your step’ is a partnership between the City of Melbourne, the Victorian State Government, VicHealth and the Heart Foundation and is part of the ‘100 Ways to Move it Melbourne’ campaign.

Zest Events led by artist Jenny McCracken, created a garden wonderland that step-by-step, encourages commuters to literally put themselves in the picture. Surrounded by caterpillars, flowers and butterflies, the aim is to motivate passers-by to engage with the bigger picture when it comes to the positive effects of getting active on your heart’s health.

“With more than 795,000 commuters passing through Southern Cross Station each week, the Bourke Street stairs offer the perfect creative canvas to deliver this important community message” said Essie Wake, Marketing Director, JCDecaux. It’s been wonderful to see people actively engaging with this impactful campaign. JCDecaux are delighted that the Heart Foundation, City of Melbourne, the Victorian State Government and VicHealth chose the Southern Cross Station staircase and are fully supportive of the push to get more people physically active as they go about their everyday shopping or commute“.

‘Put a spring in your step’ is live from 14 July – 10 August 2014.
